Yo Puedo - I can
Have you heard of the new projects for Spanish class? The project is called "I can" or "yo puedo" in Spanish. It takes all the concepts we are working with in the Spanish class and has each student review them for homework. Each project has a different amount of points available.
Each project has a variety of learning activities. A student may choose to do any of the assignments (or projects), all worth different point totals, to add up to the required amount. The student can choose whatever projects/papers/oral assessments/listening activities that she/he wants to make those points. Some assignments in the Yo Puedo packet are on the computer….some are "traditional" homework assignments…some are online quizzes…some are projects… Some will need the student to print…some will need the student to correct his/her own work…some will need internet access… The type of assignment that the student chooses really depends on his/her likes!
This way of learning puts the decision of how to learn on the student. He/she can choose the ways he/she learns best. It is called "differentiated learning" and is recommended by the state of MI and by Foreign Language Societies all over the United States. I love it!! It gives students choices, which they traditionally don't have for homework.
All work is due on the due date given to the students in class. Since he/she can choose the work he/she wants to complete, he/she has to make a decision as to which ones are right for him/her. How do the students make that decision?? Well, each student will need to read through the directions given in the handout. If the student loses the packet, please go to that specific class' webpage (on this site) and I will have a copy of it there.
How does a student correct his/her own work? The student may come in before school/during seminar/after school to correct his/her own work. If the student doesn't have time to correct the work, he/she may choose to complete an assignment where self-correcting isn't a requirement. The choice to do a self-correcting assignment is up to the student.
Why does the student need to correct his/her OWN work? Students need to learn the ways of correcting their own work. It is difficult to learn the language and there are times that correcting/revision skills will be needed.. Like when we writes our first paper. This is a skill that we work on in class, but also is one that each student can work on individually.
Below is a screen shot of what "Can do" statements are… if you go to this page, you will be able to read more about why I chose this way to teach and why so many teachers are incorporating it into their classrooms.
